Technology Integration Matrix

The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) illustrates how teachers can use technology to enhance learning for K-12 students. The matrix incorporates five interdependent characteristics of meaningful learning environments: active, constructive, goal directed, authentic, and collaborative with five levels of technology integration: entry, adoption, adaptation, infusion, and transformation. Use this matrix as a framework for integrating technology effectively.

Why (And How) Students Are Learning To Code

Read Me!

Time to make the Shift from Blackboard to Schoology!

What is Schoology? It's a learning management system that allows Teachers to create, manage, and share academic content via the internet. Similar to Blackboard and Edmodo. You are probably wondering, "why would I use Schoology, when I already use Blackboard, and/or Edmodo"?

Let me explain...
  • Schoology is user-friendly.
  • Schoology is partnering up with Schooltool in the future. This would streamline assignments, quiz grades, and tests from one platform to another.
  • Schoology offers accounts to school districts for a nominal fee - the login for Schoology would be the same as Schooltool and the School network. One username and password for all.
  • Blackboard users can export their account into Schoology.
  • Looks like facebook.
  • 24 hours a day, 7 days a week access from any device.
  • Schoology is available as an App from iTunes for the iPad and iPhone. It's also available for Droid users from Google Play.
Check out the video below, this might be what you have been looking for to streamline your classes.

Mr. Galvin's Glider Project
Students in Mr. Galvin's Technology class create Gliders based on a NASA Scientists design.  Mr. Galvin points out that careful measurement and engineering need to go into their work in order to maximize success of their flight.  During the project students learn the four forces of flight:  Thrust, Drag, Weight, and Lift.  Understanding these principles combined with precision in the building phase of the project allows the students to master/maximize the flight of their glider.  Galvin also added that they put a personal twist on their own glider giving the project added creativity.  Nice Job!!

Collaboration Tools

Learning to collaborate with others and connect through technology are essential skills for the 21st Century.

1. Screencast-O-Matic – Is a free online screen recorder program. It’s an easy way to make an instant screen capture with audio of your computer desktop and share with students. "It’s useful if a student is struggling with an assignment and needs a reteach,” “or if you need to collaborate with a colleague on a project or lesson."

2. Google Drive (formerly Google Docs) - Google’s free online document creation and editing app or web tool is popular among business professionals, colleagues, teachers, instructors and students that want to collaborate “real time” online. Google Drive is a great way to share and edit documents online inside and outside of the classroom.

3. Google+ Hangouts - This free app or web tool lets users connect with friends, students, professors, and others who want to “hang out” online. The app’s video chat and group chat allows you to collaborate with one person or several people at once. Great for collaboration for co-teaching, lesson planning, or just a convenient way to host a virtual meeting.

Mrs. Kenna's My Dream Job Project

Mrs. Kenna's Life Skills English Class created iBooks using the Book Creator app on the iPads. The project was to create a book to explain about  a real attainable Dream Job that they would like to get hired for when they graduate from Baker High School.  We used Barb, our NAO Robot to introduce the project to them and then the students took pictures, saved pictures from Google images, added text, and voiced in sound using the app on the iPad. Some of the students then used AssisstiveWare called Proloquo so that they could communicate with the class their Dream Job project.

Mrs. Formoza's Photostory Project

Students in Mrs. Formoza's class and students on team 6-6 at Ray Middle School were randomly assigned an Egypt topic. After researching the topic using library books, websites and databases, each student created a digital photostory as well as created a project (map, diorama, recreation, costume, model, diagram, etc . . . ). In order to create the digital photostory, students selected pictures to go along with their researched sub topics and then orally narrated each picture. Students added the finishing touches: title and bibliography page, music, and transitions from slide to slide then students presented their creations in front of the class!

Twas the Night Before Xmas - NAO Robot

Mrs. Nahorney's 4th grade class participated in a summarization lesson of Twas the Night Before Christmas.  It was excellent!  Barb our NAO Robot introduced herself to the class, demonstrated the poem by acting it out, and then recited back the summaries of each stanza that the students wrote.  The students were partnered up to summarize one of the stanzas in the poem.  We then had the students type in their summaries, with the help of Mrs. Nahorney, into the Choregraph software that is used to program the Robot.  The students were so excited and the learning was incredible.
