Brad, Barb, and Thor...Our NAO Robots @ Durgee

Mrs. Liebi's class and other selected students did a great job working with our Robots during WIN time at Durgee Junior High School!

Their goal was to use the Choreograph software to program a string of behaviors to test on one of our humanoid robots.  At the end of the week they worked in collaborative teams to see if they could measure distances in a small obstacle course that we setup, then program X, Y, and Theta Parameters into the robot to navigate the room.

Chirp and Tellagami iPad Apps for the classroom

Chirp App - Collect work from students

Chirp is a magical new way to share your stuff – using sound. Chirp 'sings' information from one iPhone to another. Share photos, links, notes and more: all from your built-in iPhone speaker. What will you chirp? Chirp lets you send information over the air to anyone running the app near you. Use the app to send or receive pictures from your camera, and share with everyone in the room. Chirp is the super-simple way to share that everyone's talking about - download it now. * Share photos with groups of friends * One-button simple: just chirp it! * Share any link you like Notes: you need to run Chirp to receive chirps. Sharing requires a network connection. Chirp works in noisy places too - check it out.

Tellagami is a mobile app that lets you create and share a quick animated message called a Gami.  Similar to Voki, but the graphics and the Avatars are much better.

A Gami can be an exciting tweet or status update. It can be a fun way to tell a story. It can be a thank you message or a vacation postcard. It can be a birthday greeting, party invite or cool way to share photos.
Create a Gami in 3 easy steps. 1 - Customize a character and choose your background. 2 - Record your voice or type a message for your character to say. 3 - Share your Gami on Facebook, Twitter or send via text or email.

Mrs. Bach's 1st Graders are Persuasive!

Eric, Jen and I  met with 20 elementary teachers who are piloting the use of iPads in their classroom. Each teacher was given a tower of 10 iPads to replace 4 of the 6 desk top computers in their classroom. The group shared their experiences, projects and applications. Below is just one example of a project that was shared with us.

"Our project was for writing based on Lucy Calkins and our persuasive writing unit. We began our unit by studying Mo Willems and his Pigeon books. Pigeon is always trying to convince his readers to give him what he wants by using different persuasive techniques (begging, politeness, love, etc.). The students had to decide on something they really wanted to have. They had to write a planner that showed different ways of trying to get their item using the same techniques as Pigeon. After writing, we sketched our drawings. We then used our sketches to draw in the Colorbox HD app on the iPads. Our drawings had to include ourselves and speech bubbles (just like Pigeon). Once their picture was done, they saved it to the camera roll and began the next picture. Once all pictures were finished and saved, they imported them into the Videolicious app to begin their slideshow. Once their pictures were imported, they recorded their voices reading the speech bubbles. In the end they were able to watch their videos on the iPad and make any corrections needed. As a class celebration, we had a movie viewing party and watched the videos on the Smartboard using the provided Dongle. The projects were also emailed directly to the families for a keepsake."

Real Project-Based Learning!

My favorite kind of learning-doing stuff!

The students in Mr. Fortais Graphic Communications class are creating advertisements using Photoshop CS5 on the newly installed Mac computers. I asked the kids how they liked doing this project and I got the replies I expected:

"I love it. I have to actually figure things out by doing them not just memorizing them."

Nuff Said.
